Back to the Basics: What Is Domain Authority and How Can You Improve Yours?

domain authorityAccording to Moz, domain authority (DA) is a search engine ranking score developed by Moz that predicts how well a website will rank on search engine results pages (SERPs). A domain authority score ranges from one to 100, with higher scores corresponding with a greater ability to rank.

Domain rating is calculated by evaluating multiple factors, like link root domains and the total number of links into a single DA score. The score can then be used when comparing websites or tracking the “ranking strength” of the website over time. Typically, brand new websites will start at one and can grow from there.

Steps to help you improve your website’s domain authority

Domain authority is one of the most well known numbers in search engine optimization (SEO), and it’s important for your SERPs. Because DA is based on a lot of different factors, it can change over time. Here are tips to help you improve your DA and, in turn, your rankings on search engines like Google.

Make sure your technical SEO is in place

First, you need to attend to all the technical aspects of SEO because it’s an incredibly important foundation. Without important features like your robots.txt or mapping out a URL structure, you won’t have effective SEO. Technical SEO comprises the core of a DA-improvement effort. So, in order to improve DA, you have to improve your SEO overall.

Create linkable content

The content on your website directly affects your domain authority. In order to have content marketing, you have to have a good amount of linkable content. However, it’s not just mere content that drives links. You have to have high-quality content with power, authority, and value. Even if you think you’re in a boring industry, you can still create engaging content.

Develop strong internal linking

Lastly, you need to develop strong internal linking if you want to improve your DA. Internal backlinks are links on one page of your website that link to another page that’s also on your website. These links create a powerful network within your website that benefits both the user and the search engines that crawl and index your site.

Nearly 50% of all mobile searches are conducted in hopes of finding local results, and 61% of those searches result in a purchase. If you want your site to show up in the results for those searches, you need to have a high domain authority.
